If Tesla CEO Elon Musk follows through on his intention to buy Twitter, he indicated he would lift the social media company's permanent ban on former President Donald Trump.

Musk, speaking virtually at the Financial Times' Future of the Car symposium, called Twitter's Trump ban a "morally awful move" and "very dumb."

"Permanent bans should be exceedingly rare, and should only be applied to bots, scam, or spam accounts... I believe Donald Trump's ban was incorrect "Musk said this at the Financial Times' Future of the Car summit.

"I believe it was a mistake," he continued, "because it alienated a significant portion of the public and did not result in Donald Trump losing his voice."

"I would lift the indefinite prohibition," Musk continued.

After his supporters stormed the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden's presidential victory, Twitter suspended Trump. Companies were concerned that he might instigate more violence.

Trump launched his own social media platform, Truth Social. He claimed last week that if given the chance, he would not return to Twitter.

"I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on Truth," Trump told Fox News. "I hope Elon buys Twitter because he'll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on Truth. The bottom line is, no, I am not going back to Twitter."
