Elon Musk… A Success Story, Op-ed

We always tell students in universities that the purpose of every science, regardless of its type, is the development of society.

The researcher’s first task is how he can play his part in achieving development and growth within the community; But in the United States (US), unlike in Europe and other continents, we find that this communication between the researcher and society is the connection of the soul to the body, and billions of dollars are spent on it.

The process of rating professors and increasing their salaries is mostly done through the evaluation of accurate committees, in the extent of the university professor’s contribution not only to indoctrination and teaching but to research and authorship processes, especially those that are directly related to influencing society.

Science is not only for memorization and indoctrination, as it is in our university institutions across the Arab world, but rather for production, which enabled countries like the US to obtain most of the Nobel Prizes in all fields and to have a positive impact on decision-makers in rooting pioneering public policies, and even enabled countries like Singapore that did not have modern universities- before the end of WWII- to achieve the highest levels of progress and prosperity for their people.

Singapore when it gained its independence in 1965 had a per capita GDP of about $500, and it was one of the poorest Asian regions, but in 2014 the GDP multiplied a hundred times to reach more than $50,000; Of course, reading the future and the development of education were the reason for this.

As I write these words, I recall the success story of Elon Musk, which the international media is talking about without exception... This man is the owner of SpaceX; He is an engineer and inventor out of the ordinary.

He was born in South Africa in 1971, then moved to the US and became a millionaire in his twenties, when he sold his startup Zip2 to Compaq Computer, and achieved more success by founding Aix.com in 1999, SpaceX in 2002, and Tesla in 2003.

Musk made headlines in 2012 when SpaceX launched a space rocket that sent the first commercial vehicle to the International Space Station, and in 2016, he filled his gallery with images of Solar City, cementing his presence on the throne of industrial leaders.

What is important to me is that at the age of ten Elon began to develop himself successively, so he started to develop his ability to use the computer and learn programming languages, and he has already succeeded, as he made the first salable program - he designed a game that he called Blaster.

In 1989, when he was seventeen, he moved to Canada to join Queen's University and to escape mandatory military service in the South African army. In 1992, he left Canada to study Physics and Business Administration at the University of Pennsylvania, and indeed he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and then he resumed his studies to obtain a second Bachelor's degree in Physics.

Nowadays, Musk is making headlines after buying the giant social networking platform “Twitter”. Musk reached an agreement with Twitter's board of directors to buy the platform at $54.20 per share, bringing its total value to about $44 billion.

When we talk about "Twitter", it, along with other platforms such as “Facebook” and “YouTube”, contribute a lot to the spread of misinformation and the promotion of extremism among a section of society and violence in real life...Musk pledged to get rid of spam, verify user identities, democratize "open-source algorithms" and promote transparency rather than "highlighting or blurring tweets via an opaque process."

But experts point out that addressing these procedures in words is much easier than implementing them. Most people are not good at coding; In addition, users "do not even read the rules of the platform before agreeing to them", and this is "similar to the labels placed on cigarette packs, as people continue to smoke, despite warnings about the dangers of this practice".

What I really want to address in this article, especially to our youth, is that ambition, diligence in work, capacity development and self-confidence are the key to success, and we have the best example in “Elon Musk” Life.

As I follow his path, I found that he neglects the education of his young children in US educational institutions because in his point of view they do not encourage skills and do not create creativity in the children mids, so he started drawing a special educational map for them, and Eid Mubarak!
