On Tuesday, Egypt's maven head coach Shawky Gharib revealed he has included 14 overage players in the provisional squad for the team that will head to the 2020 Olympics games in Japan, according to domestic reports.

Al Ahly's goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny have been picked as overage players in the initial selection for their nation ahead of the upcoming summer's Game.

According to an official statement by the head coach of the Olympic national football team, he said: “El-Shennawy and Elneny,  are also shortlisted."

"The two maven footballers will provide much more leadership on and off the pitch for this young Egyptian squad," the statement added.

Indeed, each participating national team has the right to call up three overage players to their squad, and Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah was understandably among the favorites to join the youngsters, with the national team working to obtain approval from Liverpool to have the player in the Olympics.

It's worth noting that the Egyptian Olympic football team qualified for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo last year after their U-23 AFCON triumph in 2019.
