Egypt’s Wheat Imports Surge by 40% to 14 Million Tons in 2024

Egypt's wheat imports have experienced a significant increase in 2024, rising by 40% to reach a total of 14 million tons, according to official data. This surge underscores the country's growing reliance on international markets to meet domestic demand amid population growth and economic pressures.

The increase comes as Egypt, one of the world’s largest wheat importers, seeks to ensure food security in the face of global supply chain challenges and fluctuating commodity prices.

The General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), Egypt’s primary wheat buyer, has ramped up purchases from various suppliers, including Russia, Ukraine, and other key exporters.

Experts attribute the rise in imports to several factors, including a shortfall in domestic wheat production, increased demand for subsidized bread, and efforts to build strategic reserves.

Also, favorable international prices in the latter half of 2024 encouraged Egypt to secure larger quantities of wheat.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stable bread prices, a cornerstone of its social support program. Efforts are also underway to diversify wheat sources and negotiate long-term contracts to mitigate the risks of supply disruptions.

As global food security remains a pressing issue, Egypt's strategy highlights the importance of balancing domestic production with sustainable import practices to meet the needs of its 105-million-strong population.
