Egypt’s Power Consumption Falls as Eid Holiday Ease Pressure on Grid

Egypt’s electricity consumption recorded a noticeable decline at the start of the Eid Al-Adha holiday period, with the country’s unified national grid registering a peak load of nearly 32,000 megawatts overnight, down from around 32,400 megawatts the previous evening, according to operational indicators from the power network.

The roughly 400-megawatt drop reflects a seasonal slowdown in economic activity as factories, commercial centers, and administrative offices reduce operating hours during the holiday break, industry sources told local media on Tuesday.

Officials familiar with the electricity sector said the beginning of the Eid vacation traditionally leads to weaker demand from industrial and commercial consumers, easing pressure on the national grid despite continued residential consumption.

The decline was also supported by relatively moderate weather conditions and lower temperatures recorded over recent days, reducing dependence on air-conditioning and cooling systems, among the largest drivers of electricity demand during Egypt’s summer months.

Sector sources noted that the unified electricity grid continues to operate efficiently under current demand levels, while maintaining a secure reserve margin capable of absorbing any sudden spikes in consumption, particularly during evening peak hours.

The latest figures underscore the impact of seasonal trends and public holidays on Egypt’s energy consumption patterns. Electricity loads typically soften during major holidays as economic activity slows across several sectors, although household demand tends to rise modestly.
