In a notable leap for regional logistics and global trade connectivity, Egypt has reported record-breaking performance across its port network in 2025, underscoring a sustained transformation in maritime infrastructure and shipping capacity.

According to recently published data highlighted in a CNN report, Egyptian ports witnessed a significant rise in operational activity, reflecting both stronger international demand and improved domestic efficiency across key terminals.

Ship traffic climbed to approximately 17,300 voyages in 2025, compared to around 16,200 voyages in 2024, marking a year-on-year increase of 6.6%. This steady growth signals expanding maritime throughput and enhanced positioning of Egyptian ports as strategic gateways between global shipping routes.

Even more striking was the surge in container handling volumes. Total container throughput reached 11.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up from 8.9 million TEUs the previous year, an impressive 24.3% increase. Industry analysts view this acceleration as evidence of rising trade flows through Egypt’s Red Sea and Mediterranean corridors.

Transit container traffic also posted exceptional gains, rising by 36% to 6.7 million TEUs, compared to 4.9 million TEUs in 2024. This sharp increase highlights Egypt’s growing role as a transshipment hub, where goods are temporarily processed before continuing to global destinations.

The performance coincides with Egypt’s improved standing in the UN Conference on Trade and Development’s Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (LSCI), where it advanced to 19th place globally in 2025, up from 24th place in 2024. The ranking reflects stronger integration into global shipping networks and improved maritime connectivity.

Experts attribute this upward trajectory to ongoing investments in port modernization, expansion of logistics zones, and infrastructure upgrades aimed at reducing turnaround times and increasing competitiveness in international trade.

As global supply chains continue to evolve, Egypt’s ports are increasingly positioning themselves as pivotal nodes linking Asia, Europe, and Africa, reinforcing the country’s long-term ambition to become a central logistics powerhouse in the region.
