In a step intended to strengthen feed and food security, Egypt's state grains buyer, the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), has acquired 290,000 tonnes of wheat through an international tender, Reuters reported.
The acquisition comprised 120,000 tonnes from Ukraine, 120,000 tonnes from Romania, and 50,000 tonnes from Bulgaria.
In October, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that the country possesses over 5.5 months' worth of wheat reserves and is actively increasing these reserves as a precautionary measure in light of escalating regional tensions.
He acknowledged that there were concerns regarding Egypt's initiative to secure more than 3 million tonnes of wheat, clarifying that this effort is part of a contingency plan to ensure the needs of a nation that frequently ranks as the world's largest wheat importer are met.
