The Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Sunday lit up its headquarters in downtown Cairo with “UN76”, celebrating the 76th anniversary of the United Nations on October 24.

The spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez said that this celebration coincides with the entry into force of the organization’s charter in 1945.

He added that Egypt will continue to shoulder its responsibilities for defending the interests of Arab and African countries and developing countries through its current membership on the U.N. Security Council.

Egypt backs the reform of the U.N. Security Council in a way that takes into account the rights of developing countries and ensures that it has a voice present in the decision-making process of the U.N., the spokesman said.

U.N. Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the U.N. Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

October 24 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.

In 1971, the U.N. General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by member states as a public holiday.
