Egypt to Import 500,000 Tons of Sugar to Bridge Gap between Production, Consumption

Ali Al-Moselhi, the Egyptian Minister of Supply said that the ministry will import an amount ranging between 400 and 500 thousand tons of sugar, which represents the gap between the volume of sugar production and consumption in Egypt without relying on the private sector.

The minister added in his statements Tuesday that the ministry will make purchases at a time of falling global prices through its affiliated sugar companies, noting that the Dakahlia Sugar Company announced yesterday a tender to import 50,000 tons of raw sugar.

Al-Moselhi explained that Egypt’s annual consumption of sugar is about 3.2 million tons annually, while the volume of consumption ranges between 2.7 to 2.8 million tons annually, which includes about 800 thousand tons of cane sugar from the Sugar and Chemical Industries Company and 1.2 million tons of beet sugar from the companies. Government and private sector, in addition to 700 thousand tons provided by the private sector.
