Egypt’s Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, represented by the authority for jewelry stamping and scales, intends to implement a barcode system for gold jewelry in July 2022.

According to the rules imposed by the authority for jewelry stamping and scales, each ingot must have certain specific information-tied markings, such as (characteristic, weight, manufacturer, origin, and serial number.)

"Tags are embedded with the important data associated with the jewelry like unique identification no, type, weight, date of manufacture, price, quality, etc," the report said.

The report also mentioned that each gold product, no matter the size or shape, must be mandatorily marked and serialized by gold manufacturers before being placed on the market in July 2022. This is done for security, coding, and traceability reasons.

The authority tested and deployed the jewelry barcode system for gold started in the jewelry management process to cut back manual work with high security, according to a report on the achievements of the ministry during 2021.

The concept of laser marking of gold jewelry is an extension to the electronic barcodes, which may be accustomed to uniquely identifying or tracking the tags attached with jewelry items.

The tag consists of an antenna and a little chip that stores a bit of knowledge to spot each item.

In conclusion, each piece of jewelry like bangles, earrings, necklaces, etc, and other assets within the gold market will be provided with a laser marking and code tag before being placed for display.
