Egypt to Have Herd Immunity against Coronavirus Soon, Official Says

Dr. Mohamed El Nady, the Scientific Committee Concerned with Competing against Coronavairus member, said that Egypt would reach the levels of herd immunity soon amid the emergence of the Omicron variant in the country, Sputnik reported on Sunday.

El Nady added that Omicron's ability to emergence fast would help in reaching the levels of herd immunity, in addition, it leaves no harmful damage to the lung.

Moreover. the good vaccination rollout in Egypt provided some sort of immunity in the society which would help in reaching the immunity herd.

He highlighted that the infections with Omicron are huge, however, the majority of cases don't need hospitalization like the previous waves.

Previously, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Minister of Higher Education and the official who shoulders the responsibilities of the Minister of Health said that the whole world is seeing an increase in COVID-19 infections, including Egypt.

Abdel Ghaffar added that Omicron is emerging four or five times more than the other variants.

The minister revealed that Egypt also that the country is witnessing a rise in Omicron variant infections and it overcame delta as the dominant variant in the country.

On Saturday, Egypt’s Health Ministry reported 1011 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total up to 398,879.

The total number of COVID-19-related deaths has now reached 22,123 nationwide after the ministry announced 26 deaths.

About 924 patients were discharged from quarantine at isolation hospitals, raising the total number of fully-recovered cases to 332,531.
