Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi announced the resumption of development work in the Zohr gas field, and the start of drilling two development wells during January, according to a statement issued Sunday.
The Minister of Petroleum added that the ministry's strategy focuses on increasing local production of petroleum products and natural gas, while intensifying drilling and exploration programs.
The ministry also seeks to enhance cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity to increase the percentage of renewable energy in the Egyptian energy mix to 42% by 2030, and expand the use of natural gas in value-added industries.
The minister explained that the ministry is about to launch the "Digital Portal for Mineral Resources" this year, which will be a starting point for expanding mining investments in Egypt.
He referred to a new draft law aimed at transforming the Mineral Resources Authority into an economic authority capable of attracting global investments.
Badawi stressed the importance of achieving sustainability in the mining sector through legislative and legal reform to develop agreement models and attract global companies.
He pointed out that Egypt has rich mineral resources, such as gold, phosphate, iron and zinc, with 150 companies operating in the field of mining, including 8 global companies.
Regarding the 2025 action plan, Badawi revealed the intensification of research and exploration programs and the increase in reliance on natural gas in homes and cars, to reduce the import bill and support the local economy.
