Egypt bowed out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the Round of 16 after a dramatic 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The Pharaohs delivered a strong performance against the world champions and matched Argentina for long periods in a thrilling contest that remained alive until the final moments.
Enzo Fernández settled the match for Argentina with a late winner in the third minute of stoppage time, ending Egypt’s hopes of reaching the next round.
Egypt impressed in several stages of the match, scoring twice and keeping their qualification hopes alive before Argentina completed their comeback and secured their place in the quarter-finals.
Despite the defeat, Egypt ended their World Cup campaign with pride after producing a brave display against one of the strongest teams in world football.
The national team’s run was widely praised after reaching the Round of 16 in the first World Cup edition to feature 48 teams and the newly introduced Round of 32.
Egypt had reached the last 16 after beating Australia on penalties in the Round of 32. The Pharaohs had finished second in Group G with five points, level with Belgium but behind on goal difference.
