Egypt produced a remarkable first-half performance against Argentina, heading into the break with a 1-0 lead in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Yasser Ibrahim gave Egypt the lead with a crucial goal, sparking huge celebrations among Egyptian supporters and putting the Pharaohs in front against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
Goalkeeper Mustafa Shobeir then became the hero of the half after brilliantly saving a penalty from Lionel Messi, preserving Egypt’s advantage and denying Argentina a route back into the game before half-time.
Egypt showed impressive discipline, organisation and defensive strength throughout the opening 45 minutes, while also making the most of their attacking opportunities.
Argentina pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Egypt’s defence stood firm under pressure, with Shobeir’s penalty save giving the national team a major boost.
Egypt reached the knockout stage after beating Australia on penalties in the Round of 32. The Pharaohs had finished second in Group G with five points, level with Belgium but behind on goal difference.
The 2026 World Cup is the first edition to feature 48 teams and includes the newly introduced Round of 32, with Egypt continuing their historic campaign on the global stage.
