Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf in New York on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The two ministers reaffirmed the strong and historic relationship between their countries and expressed a shared commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation.
During the meeting, both sides welcomed plans to convene the ninth session of the Egyptian-Algerian High Joint Committee in Cairo, with the aim of expanding cooperation across economic and development sectors. They also discussed the potential for knowledge exchange and collaboration on infrastructure and national development projects. Abdelatty confirmed that Egyptian companies are ready to contribute to development initiatives in Algeria that serve both countries’ interests.
On regional issues, the Egyptian minister reiterated his country’s condemnation of Israeli military actions in Gaza and serious violations in the West Bank. He called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire and for unimpeded humanitarian access, while reaffirming support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The discussion also covered the situation in Libya. Both ministers agreed on the importance of a Libyan-led political solution that leads to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. Abdelatty stressed the need for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and fighters from Libyan territory to fulfill the aspirations of the Libyan people.
He also underlined the importance of continued coordination between Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia through the trilateral mechanism on Libya, which he said plays a role in maintaining stability and safeguarding Libya’s unity and sovereignty.
The Egyptian minister welcomed Algeria’s recent contributions as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and the two sides exchanged views on current international security issues under consideration by the council.
