English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran announced Sunday on Instagram that he had contracted the coronavirus.

"Hey guys. Quick note to tell you that I’ve sadly tested positive for Covid, so I’m now self-isolating and following government guidelines," he wrote.

"It means that I’m now unable to plough ahead with any in person commitments for now, so I’ll be doing as many of my planned interviews/performances I can from my house. Apologies to anyone I’ve let down. Be safe everyone x," Sheeran concluded.

The "Shape of You" singer did not mention when he received his positive result or whether he was experiencing symptoms.

The singer played last week in London at the awards ceremony for the Earthshot Prize, an initiative by Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and was photographed mingling with the pair.

He was expected to join Apple Music’s Zane Lowe live to play new songs next week and had a number of other media commitments planned.

According to British coronavirus rules, those who test positive for the virus must isolate for 10 days from the onset of symptoms, or if asymptomatic, from the date the test was taken.

The announcement comes just days from the release of Sheeran’s fifth album, titled =, which is set to debut on Friday.
