The Australian pro surfer Matt Wilkinson was paddling off the coast of Sharpes Beach, Ballina about 733 kilometers from Sydney when a 1.3-meter white shark approached him.

The shark swam in a circle around the surfer but instead of attacking him as expected the shark moved under his surfing board and swam away. The whole encounter was caught on the drone camera that had alerted Wilkinson of the shark surrounding him since he didn’t actually notice the shark swimming underneath him.

What is really unique about this encounter is that this surfing area is known for its several shark attacks seeing as a 46-year-old surfer died last month due to a severe leg injury resulting from a shark attack. Also, Australia has recorded 19 cases of shark attacks in 2020 alone.
