The OCEARCH marine biologist discovered a huge great white shark that they called “Queen of the Ocean” on the coast of Nova Scotia.

The researches named the shark Nukumi after the legendary grandmother from the Native American Mi’kmaq’s people with ancestry lands including Nova Scotia .

Nukumi is a female 50 years-old great white shark that is 5 meters long and 1,606 kilograms in weight with healed scars and blotches all over her body that tell her life story.

The OCEARCH expedition leader Chris Fischer said that she probably had her first litter about 30 years ago which means she is at least a grandmother by now. He added that she has most likely reproduced about 15 times in her lifetime and could have had as many as 100 offspring.

The expedition scientists posted a video of Nukumi being fitted with tracking tags and submitting to a blood draw for the OCEARCH researches. It is also not worthy that she is among the largest great white sharks on record seeing as most female great white sharks range from 4.6 to 4.9 meters long according to National Geographic.

The OCEARCH researches are on a month-long expedition to tag great white sharks and take biological samples to try and better understand the shark population’s health and migrations near the coast of Nova Scotia.
