Ted Turner, the American media magnate who transformed global television news by launching the world’s first 24-hour news channel, has died at the age of 87 after complications linked to Lewy body dementia, according to CNN.

Turner’s death marks the end of a defining era in modern broadcasting, one that he helped shape by fundamentally altering how news is produced, distributed, and consumed worldwide.

Founded in 1980, CNN emerged under Turner’s vision as the first television network dedicated to continuous news coverage. At a time when broadcast journalism was still largely episodic, the channel introduced a radical model: real-time reporting without interruption. The approach would go on to redefine global expectations of news immediacy.

CNN’s rise to international prominence was cemented during landmark global events, including the Gulf War (1990–1991), the fall of the Soviet Union, and the Tiananmen Square protests in China. Its live coverage from Baghdad during U.S. airstrikes further established the network as a primary source for breaking world news.

Born in 1938 in Ohio, Turner inherited and expanded his family’s advertising business before entering the broadcasting industry. He gradually built a media empire through the acquisition of radio and television stations, using the profits to launch CNN and later expand into a broader portfolio of networks.

His media holdings eventually included entertainment and specialty channels such as TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies, and Cartoon Network, each contributing to a reshaping of cable television in the United States and beyond.

Turner’s model of continuous news coverage not only transformed CNN into a global institution but also inspired competitors including Fox News and MSNBC, reshaping the competitive landscape of 24-hour news media.

CNN leadership described Turner as the “inspirational force” behind the network, emphasizing that his influence continues to define modern journalism.

Beyond his business achievements, Turner is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in media history, credited with revolutionizing how the world experiences breaking news and establishing a format that remains central to global broadcasting today.
