Next month, Sotheby's New York will be auctioning a Claude Monet painting from his Haystack series, called Meules à Giverny (1893). The painting is expected to fetch over $30 million at the Modern art sale on May 15. Allegra Bettini, head of the Modern Evening Auction in New York, said that Monet's revolutionary ideas and techniques were expertly employed during a moment of significant transformation with his haystacks.

Sotheby's has a history of success with Monet at auction, having sold his painting Meules (1890) for $110.7 million in 2019 in New York. This sale established a record for an Impressionist work at auction, as well as a high watermark for the artist.

The auction of Meules à Giverny coincides with the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition, which opened in Paris on April 15, 1874. Monet's painting Impression, Sunrise (1872) became the movement's namesake when critic Louis Leroy used it in a satirical review in the Paris newspaper Le Charivari.
