Chinese companies have submitted a proposal to Egypt to establish a major container terminal at Ain Sokhna Port with initial investments estimated at $400 million, as part of broader plans to expand cooperation in logistics and industrial sectors.

The proposal was discussed during a meeting at the Cabinet headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Hussein Issa, and attended by Suez Canal Economic Zone Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Din and representatives of several Chinese firms.

Officials reviewed a range of potential investments across maritime transport, logistics, and manufacturing, reflecting growing interest from Chinese companies in the Egyptian market. The proposed container terminal would have a designed capacity of up to two million containers, positioning it as a key addition to Egypt’s port infrastructure.

The project is being considered in partnership with Jiangsu Provincial Ports Group and Shanghai Huanshi Logistics, aiming to strengthen Egypt’s role as a regional hub for global trade and shipping.

In parallel, Chinese firm Hurricane Group has expressed interest in establishing an industrial zone spanning 100,000 square meters. The project would include production lines for chemical products, fast-moving consumer goods, and household items, alongside regional storage hubs and smart logistics systems.

Around 70 percent of the output from the proposed industrial zone would be directed toward export markets, with the remaining 30 percent serving domestic demand, supporting integrated supply chains across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
