China is witnessing a surge in the use of bicycles and electric bikes as demand grows for low-carbon transport options.
According to data from the China Bicycle Association, the country now has more than 200 million bicycles and over 380 million electric bikes. Currently, bicycles and e-bikes account for 30 out of every 100 trips made within Chinese urban areas.
The figures highlight a major shift in urban mobility, reflecting rising environmental awareness and encouraging millions of commuters to adopt bicycles and other low-emission alternatives.
Estimates from the association suggest that two-wheeled transport helps cut China’s carbon emissions by around 10,000 tons per day. This reduction equates to saving approximately 6.6 million liters of petrol daily compared with traditional modes of transport.
China’s embrace of bicycles and e-bikes not only reduces pollution but also underscores the country’s push towards sustainable urban living, setting an example for other nations seeking to lower emissions and tackle climate change.
