The first of this season’s Carabao Cup semi-finals will see London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham meet at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Though there were calls for the ties to be played over one-leg amid the fixture pileup caused by Covid postponements, the EFL have stuck with the traditional two-legged format, with the victors to face either Liverpool or Arsenal in the final.

For Thomas Tuchel, the match has taken on added importance after a difficult Christmas period that has seen the Blues slips ten points behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

For Antonio Conte, meanwhile, this competition may represent his best chance of ending his first season in charge of Tottenham with an elusive trophy.

Chelsea vs Tottenham team news

Tuchel has a major decision to make over Romelu Lukaku, after the striker was dropped for Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool following an explosive interview in which he spoke of being unhappy at Stamford Bridge.

Timo Werner was also missing as he returns from a Covid absence and the German remains a major doubt, while Reece James and Ben Chilwell are still injured and Edouard Mendy has left to join up with Senegal ahead of the AFCON.

For Tottenham, Cristian Romero, Ryan Sessegnon and Steven Bergwijn remain out but Conte has no fresh injury concerns following the weekend’s late win over Watford.
