In a dazzling display that illuminated the Cairo skyline on Friday evening, the Cairo Tower was lit up with welcoming messages reading “Welcome to Egypt”, as the capital prepared for the long-awaited Grand Opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) on Saturday.

Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber announced that the initiative forms part of the city’s broader celebrations marking the inauguration of one of the world’s most significant cultural landmarks.

According to Saber, the tower’s façade will feature new messages on Saturday evening, reading “Grand Egyptian Museum Opening” and “GEM Grand Opening”, alongside the Egyptian national flag, in a festive scene that reflects the pride of the capital and the entire nation in hosting this historic event.

“This symbolic gesture is a message of pride and welcome to visitors from across the world,” Saber said. “Cairo is celebrating not only the opening of a museum, but the unveiling of a cultural treasure that represents the heart of Egyptian civilization.”

The illumination of the Cairo Tower is part of a wider series of celebratory events and preparations coordinated by Cairo Governorate to mark the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, a monumental project years in the making.

The museum, located near the Pyramids of Giza, is set to become the largest archaeological museum in the world, showcasing Egypt’s ancient heritage through thousands of artifacts, including the complete collection of Tutankhamun’s treasures.

City authorities have decorated major streets and landmarks with national flags, artistic lighting, and cultural displays, underscoring Egypt’s readiness to welcome international dignitaries, cultural leaders, and visitors expected to attend the ceremony.

The Grand Egyptian Museum’s inauguration is being hailed as a defining moment for Egypt’s tourism and cultural sectors, positioning Cairo as a global hub for history and heritage. The event is anticipated to attract worldwide media coverage and highlight Egypt’s commitment to preserving its past while embracing the future.

“Lighting the Cairo Tower tonight is more than a visual celebration,” Dr. Saber added. “It’s a beacon of Egypt’s openness, hospitality, and enduring civilization.”
