A series of live concerts in commemoration of the birth anniversary of the late notable musician Riad Al Sunbati and the death anniversary of Laila Murad will be held on Sunday night at the Cairo Opera House, under the patronage of Egypt’s Culture Ministry.
Under the direction of Maestro Ahmed Amer, the Abdel Halim Nouira Ensemble for Arabic Music will perform a selection of Murad and Sunbati’s remarkable songs and iconic pieces, reminding people of the legacy and spirit of the late musicians.
The concerts include pieces like "Abgd Hawz" "Ashwak," and "Min Yeshtary Elward," which will be played by outstanding singers like Farg ElMougy, Marwa Hamdi, Isam Goma, Islam Refat, and Samia Wagdi.
In addition to this, Cairo Opera House stated that it will pay tribute to the legendary singer Murad and Al Sunbati by screening a documentary on their lives.
Al Sunbati's lyrical repertoire features 539 works including Egyptian Opera, operetta, cinematic and religious songs, poems, Taqtouqa, and Mawalia.
Throughout his long-standing career, he composed for many famous Arab singers including Umm Kulthum, Fairouz (yet to be released), Asmahan, Warda Al-Jazairia, Najat Al Saghira, Mounira El Mahdeya, Fayza Ahmed, Saleh Abdel Hai, and Aziza Galal (who was the last singer to sing one of his melodies).
He made a great contribution to the development and popularization of Arab folk music and the great work of Egypt's composers.
On the other hand, Mourad was regarded as the Egyptian Cinderella during her era, and one of the first female superstars of the Arab film industry. She captivated the imagination and entranced the hearts of millions the Arab world.
She ruled the Egyptian film industry between the 40s and 50s and became one of the highest-paid actresses of the era.
Mourad was born on 17th February 1918 in Cairo to Zaki Mourad and Gamilah Ibrahim Salmon.
She made her first debut as a singer in “The Victims”, six years before starting her acting career with "Long Live Love", starring singer Mohamed Abdel Wahab, who also made her sign a contract for ten musical records.
Later, Mourad was featured in five best-selling films with the prominent Jewish director Togo Mizrahi.
Some of Mourad's notable works include “Laila Bent El-Reef” (Laila From the Countryside), “Laila Bent Madares” (Laila: The School Student), and “Laila”. Out of the 28 films of her career, 17 carried her real name.
The singer is most famous for her collaborations with actor Anwar Wagdi. They appeared in several movies together.
In 1945, she married Wagdi while shooting the "Laila Bn Elaghnya' movie.
In 1995, Mourad passed away, leaving behind a large history of iconic movies.
