Tarek El Mulla, Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and the ministers of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) signed the charter to formally transform EMGF into a regional organization based in Cairo.

According to a joint statement, Egypt’s petroleum ministry hosted on Tuesday the signing ceremony of the Middle East energy forum via teleconference with the participation of the seven ministers.

El-Mulla said that the EMGF charter has been finalized in a record time of 20 months thanks to the important role played by the member countries despite the unstable global circumstances, noting that the door is open for any state wishing to join the organization.

In addition, he pointed out to the private sector's significant role in signing such a charter, adding that transforming the forum into a recognized organization would be a new key for cooperation among the member states.

On her part, Natasa Pelides, the Cypriot Energy Minister, said that Cyprus supports Egypt's initiative from the first moment, stressing that the organization will support its gas producers.

Moreover, she added that any country could be an observer within the organization.

The forum’s members are Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan.

The forum was formed in January 2019 to create a regional gas market, optimize resource development, cut the cost of infrastructure, offer competitive prices, and improve trade ties.
