Governorate of Kafr El-Sheikh, north of the Nile Delta, houses some 450 gold and jewellery merchants.
There are about 270 gold merchants in Kafr El-Sheikh city, the local capital of the governorate, and its and villages. Meanwhile, Desouk City, the second populous city, and its villages house 180 gold merchants.
Abdel Aal Slemah, deputy of the head of Gold Branch at the Trade Commerce in Kafr El-Sheikh, said that the number of gold merchants in the governorate proportionates with population density and answers the needs of people of the various gold items.
He made clear that operations of processing gold in Kafr El-Sheikh are very weak as the governorate houses one medium-product factory as well as some small workshops due to the concentration of services and accessories of the gold industry in Cairo in addition to the scarcity of the ore gold.
Many factories and workshops depend on processing gold for wholesalers and retailers and trading it in markets.
Slemah went on to say that the processing of gold concentrates in Cairo is due to the volume of ore gold ore scrap of gold that is traded in the markets of the capital by the wholesalers and retailers.
He added that gold factories in Cairo answer the need of all governorates but factories and workshops of the provinces answer the local needs only and face difficulties in marketing.
Slemah pointed out that Cairo offers services and attracts adroit craftsmen, especially the foreigners who help run the new lines of production.
He indicated that transporting gold items to Kafr El-Sheikh is safe as no merchant was assailed or stolen over the last few years because the roads between Cairo and the governorate are secured.
It is worth noting that Slemah factories opened an outlet in Kafr El-Sheikh last weekend; the company continues expanding its outlets in all governorates.
