The European Union (EU) confirmed today, Saturday, that it "will not recognize" the authorities resulting from the coup in Niger.
The European Union's foreign policy official, Josep Borrell, stressed the European Union's readiness to support the expected decisions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regarding the coup in Niger.
"The European Union does not and will not recognize the powers resulting from the Nigerien coup," Borrell added, via Twitter.
He also stressed that "constitutional order must be restored" in Niger, according to the Anadolu news agency.
Borrell had said that the Union immediately suspended its financial support and security cooperation with Niger, after the military coup there.
"Niger's coup leaders declared General Abd al-Rahman Tiane president of the country on Friday, saying they had overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum.
The European Union, the United States, and other countries called for Bazoum's release without conditions and the restoration of democratic order in the country.
