US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to engage in bilateral talks in San Francisco on November 15, during the annual economic meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders, as confirmed by a senior US official.

This meeting marks the first face-to-face discussion between the two leaders in a year and comes at a time when the United States and China are seeking ways to manage their intense rivalry, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The meeting is set to occur on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum leaders' gathering.

While China has not yet officially confirmed Xi's attendance at the APEC summit, the White House previously announced that both countries have agreed "in principle" to the meeting in San Francisco.

Xi has not visited the United States since April 2017. In November of the previous year, the two leaders held one-on-one talks during a Group of 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, lasting around three hours.

Biden is expected to travel to San Francisco on November 14, a day before the start of the summit, which involves leaders from 21 Pacific Rim economies, including Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Peru, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Despite trade restrictions, national security concerns, and disputes over various issues such as Taiwan and the South China Sea, senior officials from both the US and China have increased direct communication in the lead-up to the APEC summit.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is set to meet China's top economic policy chief He Lifeng in San Francisco for a two-day meeting starting Thursday.
