Belgium have suffered a major setback in their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign after midfielder Amadou Onana was ruled out of the tournament with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
The Aston Villa midfielder sustained the injury during Belgium's 4-1 victory over the United States in the Round of 16 before being forced off the pitch.
Medical examinations later confirmed that he had suffered a torn ACL in his knee, ending his participation in the tournament.
In an official statement, Belgium's team doctor described the diagnosis as "shocking and devastating" for both the player and the national team.
"We immediately contacted Amadou and Aston Villa to agree on the best recovery plan. Over the coming days, we will work together to determine the next steps regarding his treatment and rehabilitation while ensuring he receives our full support throughout his recovery," the statement read.
The injury is expected to keep Onana sidelined for several months, dealing a significant blow to both Belgium and Aston Villa given the midfielder's key role in the center of the pitch.
