Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz expressed on Saturday that his country welcoming hosting the upcoming summit between US President Vladimir Putin, and his Russian counterpart Joe Biden, adding that it would be a great honor.

The state is already in contact with the US, and Russia regarding Vienna's readiness for hosting the summit.

Kurz told the German Pioneer: "We should not overestimate our role and we are not acting as a mediator. But there are always neutral countries that are chosen for a dialogue and negotiations."

He added: "For the entire world, for the whole of Europe, it will be good if such a summit takes place. It is not important where it will be held. Naturally, if it takes place in Austria, in Vienna, this will be a great honor for us."

Last week, President Joe Biden held a phone call with Vladimir Putin proposing holding a summit in the coming months, the White House announced.

Both leaders need to discuss a number of regional issues including the latest Ukrainian crisis.

This call is the second between both leaders since Biden took the office early this year.
