Atletico Madrid have officially completed the signing of Denmark international Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon on a five-year contract, strengthening Diego Simeone's midfield ahead of the 2026/27 season.
While neither club disclosed the financial details of the transfer, Spanish and Portuguese media reports estimate the deal to be worth up to €40 million, with an additional €5 million in performance-related bonuses.
The 27-year-old defensive midfielder arrives after an impressive spell at Sporting Lisbon, where he made 141 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 12 assists since joining from Italian side Lecce in 2023.
Hjulmand captained Sporting to consecutive Portuguese Primeira Liga titles in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, while also helping the club lift the Taça de Portugal.
On the international stage, the Danish midfielder has earned 27 caps since making his senior debut in 2023, establishing himself as a key figure for the national team.
Renowned for his ball-winning ability, physical presence, and tactical awareness, Hjulmand is expected to add defensive stability and leadership to Atletico Madrid's midfield.
His arrival marks Atletico's second major signing of the summer transfer window after the acquisition of Spanish left wing-back Alex Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen.
