At least 24 people died in India due to the aftermath of heavy rains, with 9 of the fatalities resulting from a temple collapse.

Dozens more are currently missing as the region grapples with the consequences of torrential rains, leading to floods and landslides. This grim news was reported by authorities on Monday.

The relentless downpour over several days wreaked havoc by destroying bridges, structures, and sweeping away vehicles in the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, both located in the northern part of the country.

During the monsoon season, recurring floods and landslides have become a grim reality, inflicting substantial damage. Scientists attribute the intensification and frequency of monsoon rains to climate change.

Sukhinder Singh Sukhu, the Chief Minister of the worst-affected state, Himachal Pradesh, stated that 16 people lost their lives within the past 24 hours.

Among them, 9 people perished in the collapse of a Hindu temple in Shimla, the state capital.

Sukhu added that state authorities are "working tirelessly to remove debris to rescue individuals who might be trapped beneath," urging residents to remain in their homes and avoid approaching rivers. He also noted the closure of schools across the state.

In the neighbouring state of Uttarakhand, rescue teams are tirelessly working to extract individuals from debris caused by landslides resulting from heavy rains. At least eight individuals have lost their lives in the state since Friday, according to authorities.

torrential rains constitute about 80% of the annual rainfall in South Asia and play a crucial role in replenishing river systems, groundwater, and supporting agricultural activities.
