Aston Villa have completed the signing of Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg in a club-record £52 million transfer.
The 20-year-old has signed a long-term contract at Villa Park after choosing Unai Emery's side despite strong interest from Newcastle United.
Villa moved swiftly to secure Manzambi after midfielder Amadou Onana suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, hijacking Newcastle's pursuit earlier this week.
Manzambi arrives following an impressive breakthrough campaign in Germany, having established himself as one of the Bundesliga's brightest young talents with Freiburg.
The Switzerland international scored five goals and provided five assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances last season, while also featuring in all 15 Europa League matches during Freiburg's run to the final.
He also impressed on the international stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring three goals in four appearances before missing Switzerland's Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches against Colombia and Argentina due to injury.
The midfielder's arrival comes as Youri Tielemans edges closer to a move to Manchester United, with reports suggesting Villa will reinvest part of the transfer fee by signing João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Villa are also in talks with Bayern Munich over a potential loan move for Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha, while left-back Lucas Digne is expected to complete a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in the coming days.
