Arsenal and Aston Villa are racing to sign Pharaohs' goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy this summer, English reports said on Thursday.

The English website "Readastonvilla" reported that both clubs are in talks to sign Al Ahly keeper for around £2.5 million.

"In terms of a transfer fee, the Premier League clubs are hoping to secure El Shenawy for around £2.5 million," the website reported.

The 30-year-old player moved to Al Ahly in July 2016 from Petrojet as he participated in 76 clashes with the Red Devils in the Egyptian Premier League.

El-Shenawy made 14 appearances with Egypt's national team as he was selected as Pharaohs' first choice at the World Cup last summer in Russia, alongside the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Al Ahly keeper delivered an impressive performance with the national team during the 2019 AFCON, before Pharaohs' shocking exit from the tournament.

It is worth mentioning that Al Ahly won their fourth Egyptian Premier League title in a row and their 41st domestic trophy overall with one game to spare after defeating Al Mokawloon (3-1) on Wednesday.

If El-Shenawy moves to Premier League, he will become the 13th Egyptian player joining this league after Ahmed Hossam Mido, Ahmed Fathi, Hossam Ghaly, Mohamed Shawky, Amr Zaki, Ahmed Elmohamady, Gedo, Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Elneny, Ahmed Hegazi, Ramadan Sobhi, and Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet.

Aston Villa completed on Wednesday, July 24 the signing of Egypt’s Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet from Turkey’s Kasimpasa in a deal worth up to £8.75 million.
