The Arab League has welcomed the decisions by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal to officially recognize the State of Palestine, describing the moves as “historic” and a serious step toward a peaceful settlement of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict based on the two-state solution.
In a statement on Sunday, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the recent wave of recognition, alongside last year’s similar steps by Spain, Ireland, and Norway, represents “tangible diplomatic momentum” toward the realization of Palestinian statehood.
Over 152 Countries Recognize Palestine
Aboul Gheit noted that more than 152 countries have now recognized Palestine, with further announcements expected in the coming days. Additional recognitions are anticipated during the upcoming high-level international conference on Palestine, scheduled to open in New York on Monday under Saudi chairmanship, with broad international participation.
Symbolic Weight of UK Recognition
The Arab League chief emphasized the particular significance of the UK’s recognition, given Britain’s historic role in the establishment of Israel after World War I. He said the move signals an important step toward “correcting historical mistakes that have caused decades of suffering for the Palestinian people.”
The recognition wave comes at a time of intensified calls from the international community for the revival of the two-state solution as the only path toward a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
