A senior Arab League official met with the Acting Director of the UNRWA office in Cairo on Monday to discuss the challenges facing the U.N. agency, including a severe financial deficit and developments in the Palestinian territories.
Ambassador Dr. Faed Mustafa, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Sector, hosted Roland Friedrich, Acting Director of the UNRWA Office in Cairo, at the General Secretariat headquarters.
Friedrich briefed the Ambassador on the latest developments concerning UNRWA operations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, highlighting the "severe financial deficit" in the agency's program budget.
Ambassador Mustafa, in turn, reaffirmed the Arab League’s strong support for UNRWA, calling it a "symbol of the international community's commitment to the Palestinian refugee issue." He stressed the agency's "vital and irreplaceable role" in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees.
Mustafa also emphasized UNRWA's importance in the Gaza reconstruction plan and affirmed that the League of Arab States' General Secretariat would continue its efforts to mobilize support for the renewal of UNRWA’s mandate.
