The Egyptian Minister of Antiquities Dr. Khaled Al-Anany, accompanied by 40 ambassadors, inaugurated on Saturday the newly-discovered tomb of S3 Ist.

The tomb was originally discovered by DE Morgan in 1894 without conducting a study of the tomb’s site. He only transferred 4 funerary stelae to the Egyptian Museum. The stelae depict the tomb’s owner sitting in front of a table for the offerings.

In 2006, excavations were initiated by a mission of the Supreme Council of Antiquities to start digging works and inspecting the tomb.

The tomb’s owner is considered one of the most important figures of the 12th Dynasty in the Middle Kingdom. He lived during the reign of three kings of Amenemhet II (Senusret II, Senusert III).

He was nicknamed as the supervisor of the southern and northern lands, the usher of the king, the supervisor of the royal palace, the hereditary prince, the mayor, the holder of the north seals, the judge and the minister.

The architectural design of the tomb consists of a descending passageway and a cellar of mud bricks that leads to the front chamber of the tomb. The chamber includes a coffin made of diorite rock.

It is noteworthy that the Antiquities Ministry inaugurated in June 2019 the first royal cemetery dating back to the Middle Kingdom at the pyramid of Senusert II known as El-Lahun Pyramid located at Fayoum governorate.

The newly inaugurated tomb is made of granite tomb and contains a granite coffin. It is accessed through a 15-meter-deep pathway below the earth's surface.
