Egyptian Minister of Antiquities Dr. Khaled El-Anani headed on Wednesday to Luxor to inspect the occasion of putting back the lid of King Tutankhamen’s quartzite sarcophagus to its original place on top of the coffin.

The sarcophagus was found at the Valley of the Kings in the western shore of Luxor city.

Some images of the coffin, which was discovered during the last century, show that it was pided into two parts above the coffin, before being placed on the ground in the cemetery next to the sarcophagus decades ago.

El-Enany, Zahi Hawass, renowned Egyptologist, and secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri kicked off a recent tour of the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings to inspect the recent restoration carried out at the site.

This visit came after the antiquities minister inspected earlier today the work progress of the archaeological mission launched by the ministry in Assasif cemetery in the western mainland in Luxor.

The archaeological mission succeeded in discovering colored coffins belonging to pharaohs.

The mission uncovered the biggest discovery announced over the recent period. It includes 20 wooden coffins in excellent condition, pided in two groups in two compartments within the cemetery and left in the same position by the pharaohs, the ministry added.

All details regarding the recent archaeological discovery will be formally announced in a press conference on Saturday.

New lighting and ventilation systems were installed and wooden stairs erected to facilitate visits.

Conservation work on the tomb’s wall paintings was completed in June, removing scratches, abrasions and a layer of dust transferred by visitors.
