Anani: 1st Phase of Egyptian Museum Project Transformation Completed

Antiquities Minister Khaled Anani said on Friday that the first phase of the Transforming the Egyptian Museum of Cairo project had been finalized, supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.

Addressing a celebration of the museum on the occasion of the 117th anniversary of its opening, Anani anew stressed that the Egyptian museum won't lose its position when anticipated opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).

"The museum includes a cultural heritage of one of the oldest civilizations in the history of the world," Anani noted.

The minister pointed out that nearly 85 percent of King Tutankhamun collection had been moved to GEM to be ready for its first full display in GEM opening in the last quarter of 2020.

The Egyptian Museum's development project, announced in June, is being undertaken by the Antiquities Ministry in collaboration with the Investment Ministry and partnership with the European Union with funding valued at €3.1 million.

He pointed to the start in the second phase of the three-year project.

The minister announced the launch of the first stage of the website "Antiquities of Egypt" in its trial version, which aims to give information about the archaeological sites and museums across the country.

He thanked the ministry's team who worked with a team of the Telecommunications Ministry and a web design company for developing a strategy which targets to improve the touristic services.

He mentioned that the website's first phase included data of 50 archaeological sites nationwide.

The event was attended by Immigration Minister Nabila Makram, Cairo governor, senior officials as well as 40 Arab and foreign ambassadors who expressed their admiration for the developments works at the museum.
