Al Hilal Novels “Rewayat Al Hilal” has issued the novel “The Great Ipu” by the Egyptian novelist, writer, archaeologist and Egyptologist Dr. Hussein Bassir. It is a very interesting, interactive and romantic novel, set in ancient Egypt.

This novel is based on the First Intermediate Period after the fall of the Old Kingdom in ancient Egypt, but it does not adhere to this period and does benefit from all ancient Egyptian periods, especially from those famous literary texts and stories in ancient Egyptian literature.

The main character is the fictional sage Ipuwer, who has a very famous literary text named after him Admonitions of Ipuwer, and which is considered one of the masterpieces of Middle Kingdom literature.

This literary text and the character of Ipuwer are the main frame of the novel. The novel is not is the same as the aforementioned literary work. However, the characters of the novel are created from the author expertise and vision of ancient Egypt, the chaotic period and the sociopolitical disorder theme.

The novel reworks this literary work but in a different, way and according to my own understanding of the text and the author imagination; it presents the corrupted and old ruling royal family: King Mekko, Queen Sekhmet, and their Crown Prince Gemni, in addition to the main figures of their royal court.

Dr. Hussein Bassir is the Director of the Antiquities Museum and Dr. Zahi Hawass Center of Egyptology at the Library of Alexandria.

He is also the author of several works of fiction in Arabic on ancient Egypt such as “In Search of Khnum” and “The Old Red Hippopotamus.”
