Egyptian actor, Ahmed Malek has been nominated for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards "AACTA".
The Australian Academy unveiled the nominations over the weekend ahead of a week of voting. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Sydney Opera House on Dec. 8, 2021.
Malek earned a nomination for the "Best Lead Actor in Film" category for his role in the critically acclaimed movie "The Furnace”.
He is nominated for the award alongside Simon Baker, Eric Bana, Caleb Landry Jones, and Jacob Junior Nayinggul.
“The Furnace” received last September its world premiere at the 77th Venice Film Festival and screened at the 5th edition of the El Gouna Film Festival.
“The Furnace” marked Malek’s international debut feature, in which he starred alongside veteran actor David Wenham.
The movie, directed by Roderick MacKay and produced by Timothy White, takes place in the 90s, in Australia.
The plot revolves around a camel rider (played by Malek) cooperating with a bushman, (played by Wenham), to beat their opponents in a race to reset gold bars located at a hidden furnace.
“The Furnace” also starred Baykali Ganambarr, Trevor Jamieson, Erik Thomson, Mahesh Jadu, and Osamah Sami.

Malek is starring in many projects such as the TV series "Investigation (Tahqeeq), which is set to premiere soon on WATCH iT.
He is also set to appear in the highly-anticipated film "Kira & El Gen", starring Karim Abdel Aziz and Ahmed Ezz.
The film is written by Ahmed Mourad and directed by Marwan Hamed, and produced by Synergy Films.
"Kira & El Gen" is based on the best-selling novel, 1919, and is one of the most expensive Egyptian films and one of the most anticipated films of 2021 in the Arab world.
