Ahmed El-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, is a prominent religious and academic figure who is considered one of the leading advocates of moderation and tolerance in the Muslim world.

El-Tayeb was born in Qena Governorate, southern Egypt, in 1946, and graduated from Al-Azhar University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in creed and philosophy in 1969, then a Master's degree in 1971, and a PhD in 1977.

El-Tayeb worked as a professor at Al-Azhar University and held a number of religious and academic positions, including President of Al-Azhar University, Grand Mufti of the Republic, and Chairman of the Council of Muslim Scholars.

In 2010, he was appointed Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the highest position in the ancient Islamic religious institution.
