Taliban seized two major Afghan cities, "Kandahar and Herat", the country's second and third-largest after Kabul, and a strategic regional capital on Thursday, increasing pressure on the embattled government weeks before the end of the US military campaign in Afghanistan.

The capture of the two cities represents the biggest prize for the Taliban, which has captured 12 of Afghanistan's 34 provincial capitals.

Meanwhile, the capture of Ghazni city cut off a crucial highway linking the capital "Kabul" to the country's southern provinces, controlling two-thirds of the country, nearly 20 years after US and NATO forces invaded the country, following the 911 attacks.

With the rapid deterioration of security, the US decided to send 3,000 troops to help evacuate some personnel from the American embassy in Kabul. Also, Britain said about 600 troops would be deployed on a short-term basis to support British nationals leaving the country.

Canada also would send special forces to help evacuate its embassy.
