Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Thursday joined foreign ministers and UN officials for a high-level informal dialogue aimed at strengthening cooperation between the Arab Summit Troika and the UN Security Council on regional crises.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The dialogue, chaired by South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, addressed ongoing conflicts and political instability across the Arab world, including the war in Gaza, and developments in Sudan, Libya, Syria and Lebanon.

According to Arab League Spokesperson Gamal Roshdy, Aboul Gheit told participants that the humanitarian situation in Gaza had become “beyond description,” accusing Israel of carrying out “a war of extermination” against civilians, particularly women and children. He warned that Israel’s refusal to end its occupation undermines regional stability and fuels cycles of violence.

On Sudan, Aboul Gheit said continued fighting threatens to destabilize not only the country but its neighbors, stressing the futility of military solutions. He called for renewed Arab and African efforts under UN auspices to secure peace.

Turning to Libya, the secretary-general said the conflict still poses a grave threat to unity and stability, urging Libyan-led political reconciliation without foreign interference. On Syria, he condemned repeated Israeli strikes on Syrian territory and urged the Security Council to enforce accountability.

Aboul Gheit also reiterated Arab League support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and institutions, and denounced Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory.

The secretary-general further pressed for reform of the Security Council, saying the body’s selective response to conflicts, particularly in Gaza, undermines its credibility.

Aboul Gheit closed by announcing that the Arab League will co-host with the United Nations a high-level meeting in November focused on “Women’s Rights and Child Protection in Armed Conflicts.”
