The Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL), Ahmed Aboul Gheit, held a meeting on Thursday with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, at the headquarters of the League’s General Secretariat in Cairo.
During the talks, Aboul Gheit and Borrell exchanged their views on the current developments in the Arab region, especially in Libya, in addition to enhancing cooperation relations between the Arab and European sides at various levels.
An official source at the AL's General Secretariat stated that Aboul Gheit stressed the need to maintain the current ceasefire between the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA), and to encourage the Libyan parties to engage into an inclusive political dialogue under the auspices of the UN mission.
The Arab League chief also confirmed that the Libyan warring parties should commit to the cessation of military operations, work to resume oil production and export processes, and move towards an integrated settlement of the Libyan crisis.
In turn, Borrell briefed Aboul Gheit on the outcomes of his recent visit to Libya, where he held meetings with the Libyan leaders in Tripoli and Al-Qubba in order to put an end to the crisis on its security, political and economic tracks under the UN auspices and in accordance with the outcomes of the Berlin Conference.
The source stated that Aboul Gheit and Borrell also stressed the necessity to end all military interventions in the Libyan affairs and the need to unify international efforts to implement the overall outcomes of the Berlin Conference, as well as strengthening cooperation and complementary effort between the AL and the EU in order to reach a peaceful settlement for the situation in the country.
