Mohamed Abou El-Enein, Deputy Speaker of Egypt’s House of Representatives and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PAM-UfM) delivered a strong message during the opening session of the assembly’s meetings in Sharm El-Sheikh on Friday.
His remarks shed light on regional challenges, peace prospects, and, most notably, Israel’s full control over six key border crossings linking Gaza with both Egypt and Jordan.
Opening his address, Abou El-Enein welcomed Parliament Speaker Hanafy Gebaly, describing him as a “constitutional figure of immense stature” and a “legal encyclopaedia whose knowledge and expertise are recognized internationally.” He then drew upon words once spoken by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi about the importance of peace and dialogue in the Middle East, stressing that cooperation among states remains the only viable path to stability.
During the session, broadcaster Ahmed Moussa highlighted part of Abou El-Enein’s speech while presenting a graphic map of Gaza’s border crossings. The illustration showed six passages connecting the enclave to Egypt and Jordan, all of which, remain under Israeli control.
He added that Israel had sealed these crossings and stationed forces along the Philadelphi Corridor, tightening its grip on Gaza’s external access.
“It is time to expose the falsehoods directed at Egypt,” Abou El-Enein declared. “The truth must be told: there are six crossings, and Israel controls every one of them. Our people, and the world, must understand the reality of this file.”
The Egyptian lawmaker’s remarks come at a sensitive moment, as the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire and international calls grow louder for easing restrictions on movement and trade. His intervention is likely to add weight to Cairo’s longstanding insistence that it is not responsible for the blockade imposed on the enclave.
