The United States Air Force confirmed Thursday that approximately 11,000 gallons, or nearly 41,000 liters, of jet fuel leaked from a storage tank at Kunsan Air Base in the city of Gunsan, southwestern South Korea.
According to official reports, the incident occurred on January 26 and was discovered by personnel from the 8th Logistics Readiness Squadron and the 8th Civil Engineer Squadron. Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the fuel spill.
In a statement, the 8th Fighter Wing said environmental specialists continue to monitor the site while remediation efforts remain underway. Officials described the investigation as complex and comprehensive, emphasizing that the military is committed to ensuring accurate and conclusive findings.
The Air Force previously stated that there is no threat to drinking water, as the base relies on an external water supply. Officials also said there is no immediate risk to the health or safety of personnel on base or residents in surrounding communities.
The incident has drawn attention to environmental safety protocols at US military installations overseas, as authorities work to assess the full impact of the jet fuel leak and prevent future occurrences.
