Switzerland booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time in their Round of 16 clash at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock over 120 minutes despite several attempts, sending the contest to penalties, where the Swiss held their nerve to secure victory and advance to the last eight.

Switzerland started the match with Gregor Kobel in goal, while Denis Zakaria, Manuel Akanji, Nico Elvedi and Ricardo Rodriguez formed the back line.

Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler, Dan Ndoye, Fabian Rieder and Ardon Jashari operated in midfield behind lone striker Breel Embolo.

Colombia lined up with Camilo Vargas in goal, supported by Johan Mojica, Jhon Lucumí, Davinson Sánchez and Daniel Muñoz in defense.

Gustavo Puerta, Jefferson Lerma and Jhon Arias featured in midfield, while James Rodríguez, Luis Suárez and Luis Díaz led the attack.

Switzerland reached the Round of 16 after eliminating Algeria, while Colombia advanced by defeating Ghana in the previous round.

The encounter marked the fifth meeting between the two nations. Colombia had won two of their previous four meetings, Switzerland had claimed one victory, and one match ended in a draw. Their most recent meeting came in a 2007 international friendly, which Colombia won 3-1.
