The European Union Film Festival will officially kick off in Alexandria for its fifth consecutive year, organized by the European Union Delegation to Egypt in cooperation with EU Member State embassies and local cultural institutions.

The festival will be inaugurated on Sunday, May 3, at the Institut Français d’Égypte à Alexandrie, in the presence of EU Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, several European diplomats, emerging filmmakers, and Egyptian actor and director Ahmed Magdy, who serves as a goodwill ambassador.

This year’s edition features 27 European films and will run until June 9, 2026, with screenings hosted across multiple cultural venues in Alexandria, including Instituto Cervantes, Goethe-Institut, Institut Français d’Égypte à Alexandrie, the Jesuit Cultural Center, the Honorary Consulate of Italy, and the Anna Lindh Foundation.

All screenings are free to the public and will be followed by interactive discussions with film experts, aiming to encourage cultural exchange and audience engagement.

The opening film, “Soy Nevenka,” supported by the Spanish Embassy, is based on the true story of Nevenka Fernández, who publicly accused her supervisor of sexual harassment in 2000.

Directed by Icíar Bollaín, the film explores themes of gender equality, workplace abuse, and social justice.

Alongside the screenings, the Jesuit Cultural Center, with support from the EU Delegation, is hosting a six-day filmmaking workshop led by Alexandrian professionals. The program aims to introduce young participants to the fundamentals of short film production, including storytelling techniques and technical skills.

The festival continues to serve as a cultural bridge between Europe and Egypt, highlighting shared artistic values and contemporary social issues through cinema.
